<>Abstract<BR>The definition of novel and optimized Radio Resource Management strategies<BR>is one of the most challenging issues of future advanced wireless systems.<BR>Within such a framework, we focus on two platforms: the Code Division<BR>Multiple Access (CDMA) cellular networks and the Broadband Wireless<BR>Access (BWA) systems based on novel IEEE 802.16a technology.<BR>CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) is an access technique adopted<BR>in the third generation cellular systems, e.g. UMTS (Universal Mobile<BR>Telecommunication System) and CWTS (China Wireless Telecommunication<BR>Standard). Advanced Radio Resource Management strategies, like Power<BR>Control, Admission Control and Soft Handover, are needed in order to<BR>guarantee the QoS to each communication that composes the accepted<BR>flow. These strategies are able to exploit the system capacity taking<BR>advantage from the flexibility of the CDMA technique. An Admission<BR>Control (AC) algorithm is needed to limit the number of users that are<BR>admitted in the network. Then, radio resources assigned to admitted flows<BR>are managed using Power Control and Soft Handover algorithms, etc. We<BR>have proposed an Admission Control technique I3E (Iterative Interference<BR>Increase Estimation) and evaluated its performance with respect to schemes<BR>proposed in literature. Moreover, we have developed two Soft Handover<BR>strategies: Min Power Soft Handover and Power Ratio Soft Handover.<BR>3<BR>Next generation wireless architectures shall supply the broadband access<BR>to a wide range of service types, offered by the core network. The final<BR>customers will be reached everywhere, anytime, by means of the deployment<BR>of multi-hop networks. The IEEE802.16a technology provides either<BR>high speed wireless access and multi-hop capabilities through the Pont-to-<BR>MultiPoint (PMP) and the MultiPoint-to-MultiPoint (Mesh) air-interfaces.<BR>The performance of air-interfaces is strictly related to network architecture,<BR>therefore appropriate protocols for the Medium Access Control (MAC) and<BR>Radio Resource Management (RRM) can be developed after understanding<BR>potential of the IEEE802.16a technology in multi-hop topologies.<BR></P>
